Night of Champions 2009 Review

Night of Champions 2009 Review : A Triple Threat Rematch

Every Title is defended on this night. Unfortunately that also includes two women's matches. Who knows, they could surprise me.

Legacy vs Chris Jericho & Big Show
Edge and Jericho were the tag champs, but Edge suffered the injury to his Achilles tendon. So Big Show came in his place, and thus JeriShow was born. Strange that it was two heel teams against each other. Crowd wasn't really into it since they had no one to cheer for. Although they did start cheering for JeriShow as the match rolled on. Show locks in the colossal clutch to retain the titles. Entertaining tag match to start off the show. **1/4

Tommy Dreamer vs Christian
ECW Title on the line. Dreamer was known as the last of the ECW Originals. I'm surprised that the Philadelphian crowd weren't booing this match, considering that they were a huge part of the real ECW. Face vs Face. This match actually surprised me with how good it was. I wish it had went a little longer because I was really enjoying it. Christian hits the killswitch to win the title. ***

Kofi Kingston vs Primo vs MVP vs Carlito vs Jack Swagger vs The Miz : Six Pack Challenge
US Title on the line. This could also be called the 'Mid-carders who have nothing better to do' challenge. This is one fall to a finish, which is a shame because it could have been a lot of fun with eliminations involved. This match was tons of fun though. Just non-stop action throughout. I think this probably should have been the opener, but it's still very good. Kofi retains after kicking Carlito in the head. ***1/4

Michelle McCool vs Melina
This is for the Women's title. Michelle kicking Melina off the apron during her entrance looked really cool. The DDT on the crowd barricade was awesome too. Wow, they're really impressing me here. Hopefully the other womens match will be just as good. Michelle manages to pin Melina to retain. **1/4

Triple H vs Randy Orton vs John Cena
A rematch from Wrestlemania XXIV. This was a nice change after the boring Orton/HHH feud that seemed to last forever, although it did lead to the endless Cena/Orton feud. Since it went on this early on in the show, it was obvious that there would be some sort of wonky finish to the contest. Anyway this was a lot of fun, and could easily stand against their Mania match. Orton's constant stomping took it down a little. Legacy coming out at the end ruined it a little too. Still, it's a very entertaining match. ***1/2

Maryse vs Mickie James
Divas Title is on the line. Lets hope this one can be as entertaining as the previous divas match. Nope, this is a pretty damn slow and dull match. Very sloppy too. Mickie seemed very unmotivated. Too long for what it was as well. Mickie hits the DDT to win the title. Bad match. 1/4*

Rey Mysterio vs Dolph Ziggler
Rey was just coming off and amazing feud with Chris Jericho, and Dolph wanted to show what he could do in the ring with a veteran like Rey. Dolph wasn't at the show stealer stage of his career yet. That would happen in about a year and a half. Not as fast paced as you would think, and the start of the bout was quite slow. It picked up as it went along. It was a little disappointing, but still enjoyable. 619 out of nowhere ends the match. **3/4

Jeff Hardy vs CM Punk
These two were complete opposites personality wise. The feud started when Punk cashed in his MITB briefcase on Jeff after a grueling ladder matc . This was a great match, and that's not surprising considering who is in the match. Surprised that Punk lost the title so soon, then again it was 2009. Definitely the match of the night. Jeff wins his second World Heavyweight Championship after a swanton bomb . ***3/4

6/10. Not a bad PPV, as both the World Title matches delivered, especially the Punk/Hardy match, although they would top themselves next month. The IC Title match disappointed and the divas title match sucked, but apart from that, there were no bad matches with a couple of good undercard matches, namely the ECW and US Title matches.
